The idea of wearing really tall hats goes back to the 1800's, and they were designed for battle. How does that work, you ask? How does that help in battle? Uhm, as stated above, it makes the soldier look... big, or bigger, anyhow, than his opponent.
That was the whole idea, to instill fear in the hearts of men. Really, it was just that simple.
