Replace the battery or blow the car up...

That's the decision a Tesla owner had to make recently, and he opted for the dynamite.

One thing you have to understand about electric vehicles is that their batteries wear out in time.  Just like your smart phone or laptop battery, your electric car battery will only take a given number of charges before it won't recharge any longer, and that's where the dynamite comes in.

For example, a Tesla battery is currently warranted for 8 years or 150,000 miles.  After that, you're on your own.  "So what?", you say, "It's just a battery", you say, "How much could it cost, a grand or two?"

How about $22,000.  Not just for the battery, of course, but for installation also from a certified Tesla shop.  How's that for a bargain?

There are 'uncertified' shops here in the US that will do the replacement for around $5,000, but the poor owner in our story is from Finland, and didn't have much choice.  Well... he had one choice... Fire in the hole!, and Boom, there she goes.

You'll find the full story at The Verge.  The actual explosion is around the 5 minute mark in the video.
