Hall of Famers, and forever bridesmaids

Do you know these guys?  In the late 60's early 70's their music was all over the airwaves.  Seemingly every single they released just zoomed up the charts, their albums sold like hot cakes, and their names were John Fogerty, Tom Fogerty, Stu Cook, and Doug Clifford.

Together they were called Credence Clearwater Revival, and they hold a record that has been untouched by any rock group since.  Yes, they're in the Hall of Fame, yes, they were famous around the world, and yes nearly everybody knew their songs after hearing just the first few chords.

But... but but... they never, as in n-e-v-e-r, had a number one hit.

"Get out..", you're saying.  "With all those great songs?  Proud Mary?  Bad Moon Rising?  Travelin' Band?", you're going on, and that, my friends, is their record, a world record, kind of a dubious honor to be sure.  Five times they had a new release jump almost instantly to number 2 on the Billboard charts, but none of those great songs ever broke through to the top spot.

Still don't remember them?  There are a couple of short song links down below.  You've heard them, I'm sure, somewhere along the line, no matter how old [or should I say young] you are.
